He was the assistant of the famous sculptor Constantin Brancusi in Paris. After studying brush art in China, he went to Japan and worked in clay with master potter Jinmatsu Uno. Isamu Noguchi's artistic work reflects his life and work in different cultural settings. He's considered a universal talent whose creative work isn't limited to sculpture, encompassing the creation of theatre sets, furniture, lighting, interior design and the planning of public spaces and gardens. His sculptural style is dedicated to an organic formal language that has a lasting influence on the design of the 1950s. The organic shape of the Coffee Table created by Isamu Noguchi in 1944 recalls his biomorphic sculptures. Isamu Noguchi himself considered the Coffee Table to be his most successful furniture creation, not least because it's very reminiscent of the bronze and marble sculptures he created at the time and because it authentically transposes the biomorphic elements of their formal language. A heavy, thick glass top rests on two identical legs arranged at right angles, made of maple, walnut or solid black ash. Isamu Noguchi: "My father, Yone Noguchi, is Japanese and his poetry has long been known as being the translation of the East for the West. I'd like to do the same for sculpture.
